Guided By Voices – Doughnuts for Snowmen

Fire Records

Guided By Voices - Doughnut For A Snowman by FIRE RECORDS

Did you start off the day with 'a crispy cream doughnut as sweet as life can get?' GBV did. This is their first single for absolutely ages, and promises very good things for the new album 'Let's Go Eat the Factory'. (They have reformed in their glorious 'Bee Thousand' formation of 1994).

It's got those nice nostalgic vibes they do so well. Even though they are singing about doughnuts and snowmen, it sounds like they are revealing the meaning of life. This is such a soothing slice of wintry brilliance and captivates you utterly in under 2 minutes. 4.5/5

Superchunk – Learned to Surf
One Four Seven Records

I’ve always had a lot of time for Superchunk and I’ve always felt kind of sorry for them as they never received any of the recognition they deserved. Starting out in 1989, it’s no stretch to say that without these guys, you can pretty much forget about The Get Up Kids, Pavement or Jimmy Eat World.

Enjoying a resurgence in popularity, ‘Learned to Surf’ is literally the first new Superchunk record I’ve heard since 2002. Sounding like Husker Du meeting early Manic Street Preachers, it makes wonder why I ever stopped listening to them. 4/5

We Were Promised Jetpacks – Human Error
Fat Cat Records

Human Error (FatCat AA Single 7fat83) by Fat Cat Records

Three minutes of ace rock n roll stompage from We Were Promised Jetpacks, full of adrenaline, drums and shouty regional accents. I want my music to have an edge, keep your Bloc Parties and your green-belt rock, I want a tune to hit me in the face not take me on a picnic.

They even make singing about painting rainbows sound cool, and that's no small feat. 4/5

Spector – Grey Shirt and Tie
Luv Luv Luv

Spector - Grey Shirt & Tie by Luv Luv Luv

I can’t fault Spector on their artistic taste: the video for this record is like a night at Fabric interspersed with scene from a coffee table book of photography, and the lead singer Fred McPherson looks and sounds like all of Sparks combined into one skinny human.

However, all the aesthetics in the world can’t stop ‘Grey Shirt and Tie’ sounding like a bad rip off of the Horrors. It feels they wanted to do kraut-rock and ended up with Snow Patrol with an annoying synth track. Coming to a John Lewis near you! 3/5

Toodar – Ten Paces
Rash

Toy - Toodar by Toodar Cassette Tapes

Maybe performed live and really, really loud this dance encrusted indie-pop song could be something. But the record feels a bit pointless without a remix and massive crowd crammed into a small space all sweaty and pulsating, just about able to mouth the annoying much repeated, highly unimaginative line “I just can't wait for guns at dawn” which isn't the best of hooks.

There are some nice breathy vocals from someone called Isabel but 'nice' I'm afraid is the right word and it pales in comparison to their earlier single Toy which is a bit faceless but worth a listen. 2/5
