Arctic Monkeys – Black Treacle

Domino

Black Treacle - Arctic Monkeys by Lickenart

Arctic Monkeys have pulled blinder with this California infused Brit Pop that would feel as at home in the '90s as it does now. It's as sticky and sweet as its title and slides along slowly but surely, leaving you to savour the remnants once it’s gone.

Be warned, the video is pants: all convicts and brides on the run with added Elvis impersonations. Shot in America you say? Who knew? 4/5

Oberhofer – Gotta Go
V2

Oberhofer - "Gotta Go" by infinityyeah

I first stumbled upon Oberhofer on the back of their track Away Frm U. Even though it passed most people by when it came out a couple of years ago, I frickin’ loved it – it was like a way more pop version of Blank Dogs fronted by Joey Ramone and had some pretty awesome whistling tucked away at the end of it.

Alas, they’re latest one ‘Gotta Go’ doesn’t reach those giddy heights. Lumbering along at a steady pace, it goes on way too long and feels a bit like a Simple Minds b-side by the time it gets there. Oh well, better luck next time.  3.5/5

Simian Ghost - Wolf Girl
Heist or Hit Records

Wolf Girl by Simian Ghost

I can't get a handle on this tune. Its surface is shiny, like veneer, and my ears slide over it like roller-skates on a supermarket floor.

Dream-pop so dreamy it shimmers and dissolves into the background in one long fade-out shot of the sun sinking into the sea.  It's 'nice', friendly and bright but breaks no new ground. 3.5/5

Kitt Bang & Enne – Golden Ratio EP
Electunes

Kitt Bang & Enne - Golden Ratio EP by electunes

This is a four track EP, but for the purposes of keeping this review positive I'm going to ignore the first three. The last track, Swat Chase, is a brilliant adaptation of 70s Blaxplotation funk with an added disco bassline; a tribute to those album tracks on Shaft, Trouble Man or Black Caesar where the musicians were given a chance to shine.

If ever I'm chasing a gang of international diamond thieves or driving my car into a stack of cardboard boxes, this is what I'm going to play. 3/5

Lana Del Rey - Born To Die
Interscope

Lana Del Rey - Born To Die by Interscope Records

Sorry, but Lana Del Rey has to be putting it on right? I'm happy to concede that she’s dead fit, dresses amazing and probably does spend her days lying on her bed listening to My Bloody Valentine, but she’s basically co-opting David Lynch-style Americana into beautiful but ultimately soulless pop in the same way as Adele raids the Staxx back catalogue.

I know, I sound like no fun at all, but I just find this sort of stuff weirdly hollow. Is that alright? 2/5
