Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds – Dream on
Sour Mash
NOEL GALLAGHER’S HIGH FLYING BIRDS - Dream On by Pias France
Noel was always the 'O' is Oasis, and his High Flying Birds - the better of his two post-Oasis projects - come up trumps with this absolutely typical Noel tune. It's got the jangly guitar, the solid chorus, the it'll-feel-great-while-drinking-in-the-sunshine vibes plus a killer video in which a woman repeatedly uppercuts a guy in the face while Noel referees.
Don't worry they're in a boxing ring so doesn't count as actual degradation - and it's probably some clever comment about the shifting balance of power between the sexes... In any case, this song is nothing new but that doesn't matter - it's the old formula and we all know it works. 4/5

Paul Weller – That Dangerous Age
Island
In the same way that I should dislike Miles Kane for representing that whole vintage-shop douchebag indie thing, I honestly can’t bring myself to hate Paul Weller. On one hand, he comes across like a total dick in interviews and looks a bit daft with that short on the top, long on the side’s haircut, but I do like belting out Jam songs when I’m drunk, so it sort of evens itself out.
‘That Dangerous Age’ is probably the most full on 60s song he’s done in ages. His voice sounds a bit David Bowie and the song sounds a bit like ‘Can’t Explain’, but hell, I like it – even though I probably shouldn’t. 3/5

Apparat - Candil De La Calle
Interscope
Apparat - Candil De La Calle by $EDPMC Vincent
IDM is my absolute number one pet hate. 'Intelligent dance music', do you get thrown out of clubs for not dancing intelligently enough? “Sorry love but we've told you before, your moves have to be well structured and properly referenced. Out.” Do other forms of dance music therefore become less intelligent, or 'Moron Dance Music' (chortle, chortle)?
Apparently, Berlin based IDM producer Apparat is “more interested in designing sounds than beats”, (I can't help but hear a “yeh?” at the end of that sentence), but despite my anti-intellectual prejudices, I do quite like his latest 'sound design'. The synths sit perfectly under the vocal and create something harmonious and actually really enjoyable. I can't help but think that it'll end up as the background music to a teenage drug overdose on Skins though. 3/5

Saint Etienne – Tonight
Universal
Saint Etienne - Tonight by Martan
It's always a bit of a fine line with Saint Etienne – that balance between quirky but accessible, everygirl cool and something that is basically just quite naff. The combination of ambient house-lite and Sarah Cracknell's candyfloss vocals is usually at its best when it's balanced by something a little darker in either sound or subject matter.
But in Tonight – the first single off the forthcoming album Words and Music by Saint Etienne, their first since 2005 – it's all a bit much, and consequently just boring. 2.5/5

Borgore – Flex ft Shay
UKF
This is the most poisonous, tacky and utterly pathetic collection of efforts I have had the misfortune of laying eyes on. I hope to God it's a parody. The fact that I am now obliged to review it is just unfortunate for Borgore - a misguided metal/dubstep producer. Bear in mind for a second that it's International Women's Day tomorrow. Borgore your timing is impeccable.
I don't want to see a woman shaking her booty in a paddling pool while Borgore and another minger pour vodka over her and rap about slapping her about. It's not funny. It's rubbish. Borgore you've scored a home run straight onto my hate list. The tune stinks and you can't even rap. Boycott. 0/5
