Spoonfed Singles Club with Paul Weller, Bat For Lashes and Graveyard

Spoonfed Singles Club with Paul Weller, Bat For Lashes and Graveyard

This week Mutilation Rites need to get angry, Paul Weller needs to lay off the jazz, and Graveyard need to look at their branding...

Graveyard – Goliath

Nuclear Blast Records

GRAVEYARD - Goliath by NuclearBlastRecords

They look like Kings of Leon used to, they make proper spit 'n' sawdust rock infused with snaking GnR style guitars, I bet they’ve got cool cars - they’re pretty much the greatest band I’ve come across all week.

But ‘Graveyard’? Really? It makes me think of a growling orchestral death metal band. We need to work on the branding, yeh?  4/5

Andy Lewis & Paul Weller – Are You Trying To Be Lonely
Acid Jazz

Andy Lewis & Paul Weller. Are you trying to be lonely? by vincebath

Oooh the Jools Holland crowd will love this. Think huge jazz band and lots of Northern soul – is that a thing? - for this big band tune that sees Weller channel Tom Jones in a weird but kind of brilliant way.

Weller’s taking it easy on this track but he's doing it with swagger and come December, I'll be surprised if we don't hear this even bigger, better and ten times louder on Jools' Annual Hootenanny. 3.5/5

Bat for Lashes - All Your Gold
Parlophone

Bat For Lashes - All Your Gold by Bat for Lashes

More whispy pop from singer / songwriter Bat For Lashes. There’s a suggestion of haunting PJ Harvey style gloominess in there, but it’s all polished up to the max, leaving me pretty bored after the first listen. It’ll fill the gaps on Radio 1, but it’s not setting my pants on fire. 3/5

Fake Blood – Yes/No
Blood Music

"YES / NO" EP Teaser by Fake Blood

Just when I though everyone had given up on the whole laptop electro thing, along come Fake Blood proving that in some quarters at least, it’ll be 2005 forever.

This EP is a totally solid OK. Good for late night car journeys, spinning at some Shoreditch club at 3AM or house parties where people have a had a few too many horse tranquilisers, but not good for much else. Fun times. 3/5

Mutilation Rites – I Am Legion
Gilead Media

I was expecting a lot from a band called Mutilation Rites, and now that I’ve listened to this EP a few times, I must say I’m slightly disappointed. Starting off with an intro that sounds like a Taking Back Sunday breakdown, it does get a bit better as soon as the grindcore kicks in, and the middle song ‘Blood Will Tell’ is actually pretty alright.

The problem is that I judge all this stuff against Napalm Death and Slayer, and I’m afraid to say Mutilation Rites are nowhere near those heights. The breakdowns kind of suck, the songs are fairly predictable and the singer sounds no where near pissed off enough. 'Seasons in the Abyss' this aint. 2.5/5
