Peace – Follow Baby

Deadlypeople

Peace - Follow Baby by Indie Weekly

I know that Peace are a bunch of floppy haired indie kids who all probably live in a warehouse in Lower Clapton, but I prefer to imagine them as four intrepid inter-dimensional explorers who opened a gate to a reality where Nirvana made an album with the Charlatans and brought it back like some religious artefact. My imagination is way cooler than reality. 4/5

Fiona Apple – Every single Night
EPIC

Every Single Night by fionaapple

Fiona Apple is BACK. I know I'm not alone to have been waiting on this. Her first single is a very lo-fi offering. Her impassioned, pained vocals take centre stage - there is none of the fullness of Extraordinary Machine - and she sounds as if she has been inspired by Jesca Hoop in her vocal swoops. Though there is nothing she can do that I will not like, this is not a patch on some of her earlier work.

She has always been a poet as well as a song-writer, weaving the most incredible double meanings into her lines. She says she never writes when she's happy, and this sounds as depressive as ever. She's back! 4/5

Devin – Masochist
Frenchkiss Records

Devin - Masochist by orchardmktg

“My baby is so in love with herself and now I love her too.” Great line from Brooklyn's Devin in this first taste of debut album 'Romancing'. This is pure explosive rock 'n' roll which nods to the '50s with his vocal licks (and quiff), but with an upfront, packs-a-punch sound which doesn't mess around.

As bracing as a tequila in the morning. 3.5/5

Sub Focus – Out The Blue
Mercury Records

Sub Focus - 'Out The Blue' by Sub Focus

Inducing some kind of sugar rush euphoria followed by immediate nausea, I'd imagine this is similar to what downing half a litre of WKD feels like, which is ironic as most people who get off to this in the local chain pub will have probably done exactly that.

It's even got handy pseudo-romantic lyrics like “love is a potion mixed up by careless fools” for maximum Radio 1 airtime, and a great tattoo idea for your baby. “Get ready for the weekend!” I can almost hear Scott Mills scream. 1/5

Feeder  Children of the Sun
Big Teeth

For some reason, Feeder really reminds of listening to my uncle at a family get together. I’m sure he thinks that tales of Rover in its heyday are fascinating, but the rest of us are just sitting there staring at the words coming from his mouth and wondering when it’s going to end.

‘Children of the Sun’ sounds a bit like a boring Oasis song - you know the kind of track you can imagine sitting on your mate's shoulders at V Fest waving your England flag at. The Rage Against the Machine tune is way better. 1/5
