Purity Ring – Belispeaks

Banquet Records

Belispeak by PURITY RING

Good afternoon, Confectioner.
How can I help you sir?
I'd like today for you to make me a tall knickerbocker glory. I'd like layers of thick, rich synthesizer and sprinklings of drum machine with chopped up vocal samples...
Like the one's Mantronix used in the '80s?
Yes! Just like that, my favourite. And can you swirl some delicious female vocals all over it?
Of course sir.
Excellent. And I'd like a thousand spoons because I'm going to share this wonderful synth-pop creation with everybody I pass in the street today. Perfecto. 4/5

Gold Panda – Mountain
Ghostly International

Mountain by Gold Panda

Oh I get it, this one is called ‘Mountain’ because it has a Tibetan drum sample running all the way through it. Obtuse Gold Panda, but not obtuse enough...

More of the old found-sound/ wall of sound thing that everyone has been digging on since Ratatat released ‘LP3’ , this probably sounds wicked when it blasting in your face in some Old Street basement, but on record it never really gets out of base camp.  3.5/5

Panda Riot Serious Radical Girls
Saint Marie

Panda Riot - Serious Radical Girls by Saint Marie Records

This is so dreampop it basically makes me feel like I'm moving in slow motion. It's soft and hard at the same time - like London water. I like the idea of serious radical girls - they sound soft and hard at the same time too.

Slow, sliding vocals smeared over tingly guitars. Americana, dreamy, electro-gaze. If I had a convertible it would sound good riding with the top down, this on the radio and a five dollar shake in the drinks tray. 3/5

Nathan Fake Iceni Strings
Border Community

Nathan Fake - Iceni Strings (37BC) by Border Community

Named after the ancient tribe which once inhabited Fake's native Norfolk, Iceni Strings is a melodic but dull excursion into folk-techno, sometimes known as 'Oh folk-no'. I can only guess from this that the Iceni tribe eventually migrated south, settled in Dalston and got quite into “graphic design and shit”.

It sounds a bit like when you got 100 rings in Sonic and you got to play the bonus level, and in fact as the track plays on I'm becoming frustrated at not being able to reach the imaginary crystal in my mind. Not a nice feeling I'm afraid Nathan. 2/5

Hey Sholay – Burning
S/R

Hey Sholay - Burning ((O)) Digital Release - 11/06/12 by Hey Sholay

Imagine, if you will, Noah and the Whale, Jean Michelle Jarre and the soundtrack to a feel good Orlando Bloom all playing at the same time.  Got it? Well that’s pretty much what Hey Sholay and their new single ‘Burning’ sound like.

Nice, but in a frothy ‘nice cup of tea and a sit down way’ it’s another one for the sensitive indie junk pile. It almost makes you lust after the days when everyone in a band was a over-sexed macho dickhead. 2/5
