Radiohead – Bloom (Jamie XX rework)

Radiohead - Bloom (Jamie xx Rework Part 3) by freekschroder1337
How the boy Jamie has pulled this off I'll never know. When Thom and the gang presented him with the task of reworking their laughable piece of nonsense, a lesser man would have just given it the “not for me, boys”.
Instead, Jamie put on his khakis and rope swung his way Indiana Jones style on a mission to rescue Radiohead's credibility from the depths of their own self-indulgence. It's spiritual, it's got a beat, it tells a story, in fact it's everything the original would be if Radiohead had ever been to a club or had a girlfriend before they were in a band. 4.5/5

Allo Darlin' – Capricornia

Allo Darlin' - Capricornia by Slumberland Records
Oh Allo Darlin', I understand you have an exceptionally poor band name which you probably now regret but you know, you could still make an effort. In fact, I might actually admit to liking you if you thought beyond literal descriptions of your daydreams to make some kind of half-assed effort with your lyrics about your homeland.
Australia is sunny we get it. But maybe hold off releasing this delightfully sparky, minimally twee single until we can all share a bit of summer. 3/5

Lucky Paul – Elephant Island

Lucky Paul - 'Elephant Island' by BOILER ROOM
This sounds a bit like Fat Freddy's Drop having a really intense dream, one of those where you feel like you're drowning and you wake up at the last minute with a big gasp of air. It manages to stay calm in the face of something imposing and the overall effect is this lovely wave of hypnotic pop.
However, as far as I can tell this song is not about elephants, so it loses one point for that. 3/5

The Kills – The Last Goodbye
Domino
I’ll be honest, I’ve not really been keeping up with The Kills, but I always thought they were a lot more rocky than this Leonard Cohen-esque number we’ve got right here, but you play the ball and not the man in these sort of things, so here goes.
Sticking with the Leonard Cohen analogy though, this bitter-sweet weepy feels like it would be better served by having some old grizzled vet like Cohen or Tom Waits croak it out, as the emotional sucker-punch is sort of lost behind the velvet glove of Mossart’s over-done delivery. The video is pretty cool though. 2/5

DJ Fresh - Hot Right Now
Ministry of Sound
This occupies the same musical cubby-hole as the awful DnB pop ditty 'Barcelona'. Actually that's harsh, it is marginally less awful, possessing at least a modicum of poppy, jump-up appeal. I'm not sure the drum and bass community will embrace this as belonging under the DnB umbrella. It will go down well with kids on beaches, teenage house parties and in 'edgy' Barcadi Breezer style bars.
The singer in the video has awesome high-tops. And no, that's not a euphemism. 1.5/5
