The Cast of Cheers – Family

School Boy Error

The Cast Of Cheers - Family by PluggedIn

The Cast of Cheers sound like The Future Heads spinning out on way to many uppers at the best of times but on ‘Family’ they’ve ramped up the nervous energy up to levels that are more than a bit scary. In fact, if I had to gauge these things, I’d say it probably comes somewhere in-between waiting for your parents to find out you trashed the car and desperately trying to hide from an angry boyfriend in terms of sheer, crap-your-pants intensity.

I defy anyone to get to the end of this song with all their finger nails intact. 4.5/5

School of Seven Bells – Lafaye
Full Time Hobby

School Of Seven Bells - Lafaye by fulltimehobby

Treading a fine line between My Bloody Valentine and Shakespeare Sister, this new School of Seven Bell’s number is taking menacing nu-gaze to whole new levels of refinement.

Sandwiching soaring, Ibiza foam party style choruses between delicate, almost goth like choruses, this is the closest SVIIIB has ever been to full on pop, and you know what? It totally gets away with it! 4/5

Super Hi-fi – Single Player
Electric Cowbell

Single Payer (Full Version) by Super Hi-Fi

This slightly melancholic, surprisingly romantic, brooding track reaches its peak about three and a half minutes in but manages to sustain the drama – and there's quite a bit of drama here – to justify its seven-minute length.

Overwhelmingly heavy on the trombone, it gets a bit loungey towards the end but this is what I imagine New Orleans sounds like basically all the time.  4/5

Principles of Geomerty - Edits

Principles Of Geometry - Edits by Tigersushi Records

Last week I had a pop at Radiohead for being geeks. This week I'm given an EP by the rowdy, hedonistic sounding 'Principles of Geometry'. I can just see the wild parties now - hookers racking up on textbooks with a compass hanging out their arm, empty pencil cases strewn around the room.

This EP consists of three spacey, unmistakably French nu-disco affairs. The strongest is the middle track, ISM, a portentous, militant journey through a cosmic soundscape. Carbon Cowboy (reference the periodic table – extra geek points) is chunkier and less easy on the ears, while L.A falls into hazy Jarre-esque territory. Very French, very nice.  3/5

The Horrible Crowes –Ladykiller
Suburban Records

The Horrible Crowes - Ladykiller by Suburban Records

Despite what you may think, there is nothing really that horrible about tTe Horrible Crowes. Well, except if you’re the sort of person who finds pecks on the cheeks or sage advice over a bottle of Miller Light, then they’re pretty icky indeed.

All the more disappointing when you consider that this is the side project The Gaslight Anthem’s Brian Fallon and his longtime friend Ian Perkins, ‘Ladykiller’ sounds more like something you’d find on a Fruit of Loom advert than the pained, Against Me style folk cry-along that they were going for. Oh well, better luck next time, eh chaps? 2/5
