Los Bonsáis– Ultramarinos

Juno Records

This is really not what I was expecting when I clicked the link. With a name like Los Bonsáis and a song called Ultramarinos I thought I was going to get some nerd-metal band singing about space orks or something, so I was more than happy to find out that Los Bonsáis are in fact this Spanish noise pop band who sound like Screeching Weasel meeting The Pastels but a thousand times better.

To be fair, my Spanish sucks, so this could be about space orks or laser battles or whatever, but it doesn’t really matter, as the song is just so awesome. Sometimes it pays to click on strange links. 4.6/5

Sun Glitters – High EP
Music is For Losers

High EP
Sun Glitters

So this EP is actually, (dare I use this word seriously?) Lush. I've enjoyed the past 30 minutes no end. I feel calmed, soothed and somehow embalmed. It takes you through some mellow, sunny areas, before roling you in the twinkly dappled fields, you can hear some gentle drumming in the distance but it doesn't really matter to you. You're reclining, happy as bloody Larry.

You come round as some thump-click electronica segues beautifully into a euphoric, ascending, shimmery soundscape. The day is over, the office is empty. The sun is gone. 4/5

Raffertie – Mass Appeal
Ninja Tune

Mass Appeal EP by Raffertie

You know what disappointed me most about that new Tron movie: the soundtrack could have been way better. Daft Punk was handed this perfect opportunity to create a modern day Georgio Mordoer soundtrack and instead they went all Hans Zimmer and ruined it with orchestra crashes and cheesy string parts.

After listening to Mass Appeal, I wish someone had let Raffertie have a go. I’m pretty sure he could have come up with something that was totally cold and machine like on one hand, but totally banging when it needed to be. 4/5

Hiem & Phil Oakey - 2am
Nang Records

CLIPS: Hiem & Phil Oakey - '2AM' by Nang Records

Sheffield in the house. Electro producers Hiem have teamed up with the steel city's first son and master of the double-haircut Phil Oakey to produce this piece of inoffensive electro-pop.

The remixes on the EP from the likes of Argentinian whizkid Toomy Disco make this a solid 3/5, but there's something really funny about a 60 year old man singing “just coz its 2 o clock don't mean we have to stop.” Bloody right too Granddad, even Sir Buzz Killington stays out until at least 4. 3/5

Jasmine Kara – Ain't No More Room
Tri-Sound

Ain't No More Room (Preview) by Jasmine Kara

Thank Jasmine Kara for pulling this wicked track by The Kittens out of obscurity and pat her on the back for doing a very decent cover, but wash your hand afterwards. She comes off a little scummy in the video but her youthful voice brings a sunshine-pop quality to this track which has probably come out a little early in the year.

If the weather were warmer and if I was one of those dweebs who drive around the city with the top-down, I'd still be clever enough to seek out the original. 3/5
