Sunless '97 – Body Weather/Azul

Warp Records

Body Weather / Azul Single by SUNLESS '97

'Azul' and 'Body Weather' are a good pairing. They're like something Arthur Russell might have come up with in his most obscure days, especially Azul. Plinkity- plonkity, summery, shimmery, you barely notice these tunes but when they're over you miss them.

Azul is thicker, a custardy kind of track. Body Weather is more marshmallow, a little fluffy and bizarrely supported by a bit of '80s saxophone that slinks in out of nowhere. Sunless '97 are very possibly just airy-fairy nonsense but they've got that sugary addictive thing going on. 4/5

Girls Names/Weird Dreams – Split Single
Slumberland

Girls Names/Weird Dreams split by Slumberland Records

Showcasing two great jangle pop bands from both sides of the Irish sea, the Girls Names/Weird Dreams split is easily the most summery record that’s come across my desk in months. It’s just a shame we don’t have a summer to go with it. 4/5

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - Everybody's On The Run
Sour Mash Records?

Noel Gallagher - Everybody on the run by Mike Gallagher Hdz

Noel's latest single is a high-flying, euphoric ballad; not dissimilar to his Oasis formula. OK, very similar - but that doesn't mean it's not good. It's the kind of record you put on when you're walking out the door on a Friday, coat slung over your arm, trilby/ipad/cigarette at a jaunty angle, sunlight bouncing off your fashion spectacles, a beer in your bloodstream, a spring in your step.

And the video is awesome! It's all serendipitous, high drama with an epic chase, some fly moves on a skateboard and Mischa Barton running around in leopard print underwear. Ticks every box. 4/5

FAYE – Water Against The Rocks
Best Fit Recordings

FAYE - Water Against The Rocks by Best Fit Recordings

Fittingly for somebody perpetually out of touch with contemporary music, my last single review as Arts Editor at Spoonfed sounds like it should have been released in 2009, when the likes of Robyn, Le Roux and Ladyhawke were spraying icy female vocals all over huge canvases of freshly-primed electropop.

So it's a bit dated, but ‘Water Against The Rocks’ – the second single from sculpted Swedish beauty FAYE – is elevated by insistent, raggedly elegant vocals that tingle, taunt and linger long after departing in a rivulet of violet vapour. 4/5

Blood Diamonds ft Grimes - Phone Sex
4AD

Blood Diamonds - Phone Sex (feat. Grimes) by @caramelodecoca

Hi, what are you wearing? Could you speak a little clearer please, I can't make out anything you're saying. Speak closer to the phone and turn the music down. Steel drums - shit I hope this isn't an international call. How much is this costing me? Did you just say "Please Daddy take me home?"

*hangs up*

Worst.....phone sex.....ever. 2/5
