Spoonfed Singles Club with Taylor Swift, Palma Violets and Wiley

Is Taylor Swift a bunny boiler? Has Wiley run out of rhymes? Is Lambeth really that bad? For the answers to all these questions and more, we visit the singles' club.

Wiley and Mark Pritchard – Scar/Money Man
Big Dada Sounds
Wiley & Mark Pritchard - 'Scar/ Money Man' by Big Dada Sound
I’m just going to say it, I quite like Wiley, but even I have to admit he’s running out of rhymes. “I can make 'em see red like Tizer, JME’s the best T-shirt designer?” Jesus, I know he’s in a rush now-a-days, but even Tinie Tempah wouldn’t touch those couplets.
Anyway he’s teamed up with dubstep pioneer Mark Pritchard to put out these two songs on Big Dada Sounds. The lyrics are total nonsense, but it does sound like Wiley rapping over the soundtrack from some long lost Commodore 64 game, which wins some mega points in my book. 4/5

LULS - Swing Low
Paradyse
Swing Low / Young by LULS
There’s nothing really wrong with LULS, they all look like nice enough chaps, especially in silhouette, but I can’t help that I’ve heard this one before. In fact, ‘Swing Low’ sounds like five songs in one, with a bassline taken from a Placebo track, the vocalist swapping between Sting and the dude from Interpol and the Moog bit at the end sounds a bit like The Horrors.
There’s nothing wrong with sounding like other people, and I know this is their first proper single so I can’t be too harsh, but I always think that bands sound better when they transcend their influences and develop a sound that is all their own. So what I’m really saying is that we need to stick LULS back in the oven – they ain’t quite done yet. 3/5

Palma Violets – Best of Friends
Rough Trade
Palma Violets - Best of Friends by Brattwell Recordings
Palma Violets are one of those bands I keep reading about at the moment. Seemingly the hook when you’re writing about these guys (if you haven’t seen anything about them yet) is to mention that they’re a really decent DIY band but come from Lambeth rather than Dalston. This is all true, but it does sort of imply that everything in Lambeth is inherently a bit shit where nothing good ever happens, so it’s like this massive surprise when a cool band comes from there. It’s not that bad.
‘Best Friends’ is the first real single these guys have put out. It’s kind of like the Horrors meeting The Vaccines and while being a fairly solid indie rock song, it’s nothing really to write home about, although it’s at the right pace for some serious drunken swaying if you drop it at the end of a night. 3/5

Martin Eden - Worker
Lefse Records
Worker by martin eden
This takes me to a futuristic totalitarian police state where the government controls all art, releasing one new piece of music per year with utilitarian titles like ‘Worker’, ‘Leader’ or ‘Loyalty’.
These hypnotic songs get played on repeat over loud speakers while the people work their 18 hour shifts silently in a strange fear induced catatonia. Sounds like fun doesn’t it? No it doesn't, Martin. 2/5

Taylor Swift - We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together
Big Machine
Taylor Swift - We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together by Taylor Swift Music
Taylor Swift strikes a blow to the heart of men everywhere with her heroic declaration of female independence. Although somewhat gentler lyrically than the B-Side 'I’ve Slashed Your Fucking Tyres You Bastard', ‘We are Never’ displays Taylor’s unrivaled ability to tug at the purse strings, sorry, heart strings of teenage girls worldwide.
"We called it off again last night"
(I told you to stop turning up at my house screaming. Again.)
“We are never ever ever EVER getting back together! Like EVER!!!!”
(I don’t want to get back with you Taylor, you told everyone you were my girlfriend without me even knowing)
“So he calls me up and he was like ‘I still love you……’ ”
(I deleted your number and blocked you from calling me, I haven’t had any contact with you for two months) 1/5
