Zig Zags – Scavenger
Mexican Summer
Zig Zags - Scavenger by Mexican Summer
I can’t really tell you much about Zigs Zags apart from they are named after a brand of shoes, come from Los Angeles and used to be into heavy metal back in high school. Then again, when you make songs that sound like a cross between Motorhead and Kyuss, I suppose back stories don’t really matters that much.
The bigger mystery is how Mexican Summer keep finding bands like this? Absolutely amazing. 4.5/5

Tennis – Origins
Fat Possum
Tennis - Origins by garrettsorrels
Someone's told Beth Ditto to tone it down and she actually listened! If The Gossip had gone to private school, this is what they might sound like. It's got a swagger but not a strut. Tennis vocalist Alaina Moore has a rawness and energy to her vocals that would make Bjork crack a smile, and a softness The Magic Numbers wouldn't flinch at.
As a standalone, it's a bit blah but shines a green light in the direction of the album for sure. 4/5

Sinead O'Connor – Wolf Is Getting Married
One Little Indian
Sinead O'Connor - The Wolf Is Getting Married by PurplePR
I really like this. It would be easy to make some glib comment about her failed marriages, but I'll leave that to the trashy websites who do it so well. Instead I'll say Sinead returns in fine form with this powerfully emotive pop song, even if the video is a bit weird.
Some cracking lyrics and her trademark spine tingling chord changes. 4/5

The Drums – Days
Island Records
The Drums - Days by UMPG Synch NL
The Drums; The classic example of why giving your music to a zillion advertisers sucks the soul of your band. I honestly find it hard to listen to that ‘Let’s Go Surfing’ song without imagining the consumer goods it’s been used to flog that particular week.
The upside to all this is that The Drums have presumably made so much money from the last couple of singles, that they can now get away with releasing their more experimental tracks. ‘Days’ is significantly darker than what you’d usually expect from the Drums, and with all the death and sucide references, it probably won’t be on a Hollyoaks' montage any time soon, but when has that ever been a bad thing? 3/5

Ed Sheeran - Drunk
Warner Music
Drunk - Ed Sheeran by kristina_pitt
It's great that a nice young lad has done well for himself, it's even better that he's not singing about getting rich, smacking bitches or shooting people. But when Adele wins best British female at the Brits and Ed Sheeran best male, is it not time to look at ourselves and wonder when it all got so boring? What happened to taking risks? Pushing boundaries? America have got GaGa, Rihanna, Beyonce – all world beating superstars. We've got the kid you stick in goal.
I've got no idea how many stars to award this as it evokes as much feeling in me as being told Glade have released a new air freshener, but look at it this way - if you like your toast without butter, think Savage Garden are underrated or have bought a new badminton racket in the last year, Ed's your man. 1.5/5
