The Jezabels – City Girl

PIAS

Wow. Instantly arresting, feels like running through a thunderstorm, tears and rain streaking your face. The Jezabels' music is big. Strings, soaring vocals: it's bigger than pop somehow, deeper and more meaningful.

It's kind of Florence meets Shakespeare's Sister... Is that complimentary? It's dark, wanting, it sends shivers down your spine when it drops. And you feel the heartache too. 4.5/5

The Phenomenal Handclap Band ft Peaches – Walk the Night
Common Folk

The Phenomenal Handclap Band & Peaches - Walk The Night (excerpt) by Gomma

Do you know what there isn’t enough of right now; walking-into-a-disco music. The Phenomenal Handclap Band have obviously seen this gap in the market as well, as they’re latest single fits the bill totally. Stick this on really loud and then enter a room; I defy you not to feel like a total badass.

A kind of hodgepodge of Sly and the Family Stone, Link Ray and !!!, I’m not sure how Peaches features on this, but it’s wicked anyway. The promo even has some nakedness in it!  4/5

Zulu Winter – Silver Tongue
Play It Again Sam

Zulu Winter - Silver Tongue by Zulu Winter

Zulu Winter has grown on me. They've gone from a point of repellent blandness to, 'OK I wouldn't change the station' status. But then I found out Zane Lowe made them his 'Hottest Record In The World'. God damn you, Lowe.

If I had discovered ‘Silver Tongue’ years ago, like well before Mystery Jets, they might stand a chance, but they're about seven years too late to make me give a damn.  3/5

Japandroids The House That Heaven Built
Polyvinyl

Japandroids - The House That Heaven Built by ZF//NXXXII//I

What is it about this song? Why do I like it? I've rubbished dozens of similar sounding tunes, with emo blokes shouting emo stuff from behind a wall of fuzzy guitars and poppy choruses, as 'Inbetweeners fodder' or 'straight-to-Hollyoaks', but there's a sincerity here which stops it from being completely unbearable.

Maybe it's because the rawness in singer Brian King's voice distracts from the pop goofyness and lends it a punk tinge, maybe it's just because Japandroids is one of the best band names I've heard all year. Whatever the reason, this gets a surprisingly high 3/5 from me. It probably will still end up on a Soccer AM goal montage though.  3/5

Saturdays – 30 Days
Polydor

30 Days (Youtube Rip) by The Saturdays HQ

God, could you imagine spending 30 days with the Saturdays? It would be like being Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest but with the hospital staff replaced with the cast of The Only Way is Essex. The idea is so horrifying, maybe the government should consider utilising the Saturdays and a disused mental asylum to break down Al Qaeda prisoners or something.

Actually scratch that, ’30 Days’ is such forgetful sub-David Guetta pap that seems to produce a strange case of amnesia in anyone who dares listen to it. I’ve played it to five different people now, and they can’t actually remember hearing it. The only blatent product placement in the video is from Citroën; says it all really. 1/5
