Wavves go back in time, Django Django go Hot Chip and Bloc Party get sad.

Wavves – Hippies is Punk

Adult Swims

Wavves - Hippies Is Punks by The 405

Or should that be Wavzer? Or even Wavvement? Because ‘Hippies is Punks’ is so full on ‘90s indie rock, it sounds like it should be a hidden track on 'Pinkerton' or something. The patische is so pitch perfect, they’ve even managed to recreate that washy fuzz-pedal guitar sound on the solo; now that's attention to detail.

Even though it’s hardly breaking new ground, I still absolutely love this record. It’s some well timed slacker pop that’s landed just in time to soundtrack my late summer of cider drinking in Clissold park. Nice work guys! 4/5

Stealing Sheep - Genevieve
Heavenly Records

Stealing Sheep Genevieve by FredRuddick@SonicGun

A trio of twee girls, their honey smooth voices harmonizing over rustic bubblegum folk. It’s a winning formula, but is it still interesting? I’m not sure anymore. I’m going to stick my neck out and put a tenner on the video having some kind of crackly sepia footage of the girls doing ‘retro’ stuff.

Nice tune, but ‘nice’ doesn’t get you any more than a 3, not in this game. 3/5

Django Django – Bail Hop
Because Music

Django Django - Bail Hop by Django Django

Has anyone else noticed that Django Django are slowly morphing into Hot Chip? If it wasn’t clearly labelled on Soundcloud, I’d have trouble knowing the difference. Kicking off with glitchy vocal sample before the super-massive drums and synths kick in ‘Bail Hop’ is a straight throwback to dancefloor electro of 2005.

All they need now is a slightly overweight beardy guy hitting the Moog and they’re there. 3/5

Bloc Party – Day Four
Arts and Crafts

Day Four by blocparty

A surprisingly dull, immensely forgettable offering from a usually distinct band and dammit, I've missed these guys! Especially because it's just about socially acceptable to admit you're a fan even though they were always on the OC soundtrack.

Anyhoo, what's all this about, this 'Day Four' track? It's like they're preparing to duet with Sarah McLachlan. Cheer the fuck up or get properly angry about something please. 2/5

Mothlite – Seeing in the Dark
Kscope

MOTHLITE - SEEING IN THE DARK by Kscopepromo

I imagine this evokes the same sort of bleak loneliness which comes from two hours waiting for a bus on an empty road. It’s a bright beautiful world out there!

Open your curtains and get some fresh air, boy. There’s acute melancholy and then there’s plain drab, and this, unfortunately for me and for Mothlite, falls on the wrong side of that line. 2/5
