White Fence – Green Balloon
Sexbeat
White Fence - Green Balloon by Sexbeat London
If you haven’t hear of White Fence, then please allow me to enlighten you. The catch-all term for former Strange Boys and Darker My Love member Timothy Presley, he takes the 60s psych-revolution and minces it up so it sounds like it’s being played on some weird tape that has been buried in toxic waste for 30 years. It’s like doing shrooms without doing shrooms.
‘Green Balloon’ represents everything that is amazing about the ‘Fence. Sounding like The Great Society meeting Harmonium with a mega wig out at the end, its best enjoyed whilst staring into a lava lamp. Groovy. 4.5/5

Doldrums – Egypt
Souterrain Transmissions
Doldrums - Egypt by Souterrain Transmissions
Doldrums has sprung from the same Montreal warehouse scene as Grimes, and indeed they share that ethereal, slightly grubby star-gazing vibe. Egypt is a sprawling ragamuffin of a tune, with overtures of carnival tin-pan bashing and rattlesnake combs being strummed.
The vocals are Little Dragon meets Bjork - utterly beautiful and weaving nicely with the technicolour patchwork of electronics beneath. There are moments of techno, and an almost tribal basis which sounds drawn from a junkyard. Purely original and full of an underground energy. 4/5

Liars – No 1 Against the Rush
MUTE
Liars - No.1 Against The Rush by La Chunga Publishing
Liars never seem too bothered to colour between the lines. Since 2000 they done art punk, dance, post rock and indie, and now they’ve decided to give synth pop a go by sounding like Michael Hutchence fronting the Human League circa 1979.
‘No 1 Against the Rush’ is a bit of a return for these guys. It might feel like the soundtrack to one of those crappy educational films in places, but it also seems to wash over you like a warm bath. 4/5

Kindness – House
Female Energy
Kindness - House by TOODAMNFUNKY
It's a nice, one this, dreamy, with big, spacious drums backing an emotional vocal. The video is a touch pretentious though be warned. It's Adam Bainbridge talking you though how progressive this single is, with snippets interspersed.
"Now that's not just cheery - it's also very unorthodox" he declares about the opening bars. He teaches a kid how to use a drum machine. He shows how the tune is put together. All very nice I suppose. All very nice. 3/5

Lemonade – Neptune
True Panther Sounds
Lemonade - Neptune by DIY Magazine
Music doesn't get much more sensitive than this. I imagine the singer bursts into tears as soon as he's done and needs to be consoled with a blanket. Chin up guy, plenty more fish and all that.
Despite the emotion-o-meter being cranked up to 'annoying', Neptune (so called because Neptune was famously the Roman god of hipsters and crying) does have an appealing melancholic-pop feel to it - late 90s / early 00's Madonna maybe. Of course Madonna would eat this lot for breakfast and probably leave them wandering around Victoria Park jotting down abstract sentences into a pocket notebook like 'grow a pair'. 3/5
