Shinies – Shola
Dirty Bingo
Shola by SHINIES
I might be at work now, but thanks to the long weekend just been, I’m still on holiday in my head. For the last couple of days, I’ve stared at the taunting, blinking cursor in Word and imagined a scenario where I throw my PC out of the window, meet a cute girl in a convertible and head off for a day of square-bashing mischief – a bit like in that Smashing Pumpkins video.
Funnily enough this new single by Shinies will be playing the whole time. 4.5/5

Willy Mason – Restless Fugitive
Astralwerks/EMI
Willy Mason - "Restless Fugitive" by willymason
The voice of Johnny Cash and the charm of Gregory Peck, 'Restless Fugitive' is the tall, dark and handsome of folk music. I’ve no idea what this American chap actually looks like but this song is one studly man-dime. If you have the patience for the long, slow ramp up to lovely, what follows is six minutes of vintage heartbreak with a rather political core. 4/5

Seye Adelekan – White Noise
Stranger Records
White Noise by Seyemusic
This is a jaunty splice of African-influenced pop. Tribal, funky, uplifting. There are so many crashing influences in this percussive little number that it's most enjoyable to abandon trying to piece them together, forget Vampire Weekend exist and concentrate on the sweetness of Seye's vocals.
Yep he's Gbenga from Metronomy's brother - but that's irrelevant - this is decent in its own right and he's been supporting Emeli Dande and Lana Del Rey. Clearly on the rise. 3.5/5

Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs – Tapes and Money
Polydor
Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs - Tapes & Money by thiagoney
Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs’ real name is Orlando Higginbottom, I’ve discovered without much effort. But don’t judge him on that; judge him by the boring rave-pop he emits much like the ungodly glow of the BT Tower. 'Tapes and Money' is very Radio 1, very summer and very dull. FYI the John Talabot remix is darkly superior but just as boring. 2/5

Simian Mobile Disco – Seraphim
Witchita
Seraphim by Simian Mobile Disco
Listening to Simian Mobile Disco is a lot like meeting up with your uni mate for the first time in five years. You remember a guy who once drank a whole bottle of vodka from a wok, only to find out he has become the regional sales manager for Sun Life and has just bought a semi-detached outside Reading.
Now, I’ve got nothing against SMD trying to go all Booka Shade and acid, but dude? Where’s the party? 2/5
