A family of foxes take on some dastardly famers in this brilliantly varied puppet show.

Puppet shows are one of the best ways to get children into theatre and Fantastic Mr Fox at Little Angel Theatre is a great example of why. Aside from the stellar puppets, classic story and great music, there are storytelling elements that hold an audience full of children like only a Roald Dahl tale can.

A fantastic cast, led by Charlie Folorunsho as the cocky Mr Fox, take up a gaggle of rod puppets enabling three little foxes and their brave father to take on three dopey, mean farmers in a battle of wits. And these meanies are particularly unpleasant. Bad breath, low IQs and latent alcoholism are at the heart of Bunce, Boggis an Bean's mission to oust Mr. Fox and his adorable family from their lands. The children delight in baby foxes Scarlett, Ginger and Rusty as they scamper around on stage and sometimes among the audience, joined by a cast of furry, fun-loving animals including Badger and his son White Stripes.

Fuelled by their own specially brewed cider, the farmers try any way they can think of to get rid of their fox problem. Director Steve Tiplady expertly creates a subtly ominous atmosphere that has children transfixed, but it's the music that sets this show apart. The story is punctuated with brilliantly catchy songs that are for the most part cheery and light and occasionally artistically dark.

Fantastic Mr Fox is consistently energetic and well paced. Peter O' Rourke's clever design sheds layers and opens up nooks and crannies which are pretty handy when you're being perused by tipsy farmers. It also gives the audience something new to discover and works well when the characters need to be particularly inventive. If you're considering taking children along to a pre-Christmas theatre show, this is one has it all.
