The curiously brief folks at Inspector Sands spare a moment or two to tell us about the inspiration behind their dauntless play 'If That's All There Is'

What was it about Peggy Lee's song 'Is That All There Is' that inspired the play?

The feelings described in the song felt very familiar. The song is about a woman describing the first time she experienced various things in her life – the circus, a house fire, falling in love – and after each she is left with the hollow ‘is that all there is?’ feeling of the title. In this particular time and place, we expect a lot from our lives (and are encouraged to do so by the imagery which surrounds us). Reality often fails to match up.

If That's All There Is has been described as a 'mini-epic' – what's so epic about everyday, modern anxieties?

Well often not very much. And the show is about that yearning for something more cinematic, something more vivid and intense, preferably in HD and with a perfectly judged soundtrack. And of course this can become a distraction; it can prevent you from opening up your eyes to the reality of what is going on in your own life and the wider world.

Should we read into the parallel between your name and the code phrase use by British transport authorities to indicate an emergency?

If you like.

What has been the biggest challenge in creating If That's All There I
s?

Finishing it.

Who's your favourite eccentric character from Film/TV?

Basil Fawlty. Niles Crane. Jack Donaghy. Peggy Olsen.

What do you think is at the heart of good theatre?

Curiosity, honesty and a sense of humour.

If That's All There Is runs at Battersea Arts Centre until April 10th
