New Writing, Musicals and Angry Fishermen: Editor's Choice - Theatre

23 September, 2011
by: Naima Khan

Every Friday our editors bring you their personal highlights of the week ahead. Naima Khan selects her top three plays.

From 27th September

Off Cut Festival @ Riverside Studios
I know a lot of people will disagree, but for me, the best kind of plays are short, sharp and to the point.  Ones that slap you in the face with their scripts and talk at you with their characters. Off Cut Festival is a good three weeks of theatre makers attempting to do just that. What's more, theatregoers get to vote for the winner of the Audience Award which goes to the best play at the end of festival.

From Wednesday 28th September
Bound @ Southwark Playhouse
Performed in The Vault, Bound sees the mismatched crew of a fishing trawler battle each other and the forces of nature in an angry tragedy on the sea.

From Tuesday 27th September
The Baker's Wife @ Union Theatre
Parade and Ragtime have got me suddenly got me into musicals in a big way. Solely for the hilarious things you can put in a musical script that you could never include in a straight play (and those two aren't even comedies). The Baker's Wife looks like it'll satisfy on that level and then some, as it tells the story of a frustrated Baker who refuses to serve the townspeople bread until his wife returns.
