Naima Khan takes a look at the line up for this month's SpeechMotion
In September I was invited to a night of film and performance in Shoreditch in the form of SpeechMotion – it delivered, believe me. Here's why:
1. Lennie loves you
The night is run by the rather charming Lennie of MSFT. Aside from remaining cucumber cool, as musicians, spoken word artists and Missy -her very well behaved dog- potter about the place, she ensures everyone's catered for and her line-up gives everyone something different to take away.
2. Film
When I went in September, two short films were shown and there was a Q&A with Tom Geens, one of the directors, who probably didn't know it but was quite inspiring. His film, You're the Stranger Here, stirred up a few questions and got some debate going. This month's featured films are Hotel Central by Matt Hulse and O Teu Sepato (Your Shoe) by Joao Seica.
3.Poetry
Spoken word artist Catherine Brogan, warms up the crowd and her fellow performers before they take to the stage. She will essentially charm the pants off you with her Northern Irish accent and her general political take on the world. This month the guest performer is Sabrina Mahfouz, a most entrepreneurial, award winning poet with one hell of a stage presence.
4.What the?!
There's generally a great programmed line-up of established and emerging artists to enjoy but you never can tell what's going to happen at SpeechMotion. Regularly an inconspicuous member of the crowd gets up and sings a belter of a tune that has you stunned into silence or raps like a genius-cum-madman.
5. It's the perfect showcase for your stuff
Though rarely perfect, there's something alluring about seeing someone take a chance. If you've got some words on paper you want to perform, or a short film to show, here's the place to do it. The camaraderie between performers is unlike any other open mic night. Sign up by 7pm.
SpeechMotion is at The Horse & Groom in Shoreditch every last Tuesday of the month.
