Les 7 Doigts de la Main return to Peacock Theatre this April. Naima Khan tells us what to expect.

The quintet that make up Le 7 Doigts de le Main are renowned for their rich, layered performances that bafflingly manage to weave together a distinct theatrical narrative with awe-inspiring acrobatics. Pioneers of modern circus, they more or less grew up together and bring that familial knowing to their synchronised performances. The name under which this band of supple renegades operate under – 'The 7 Fingers of the Hand' – loses much of its symbolism in translation but essentially these performers are intrinsically linked and unshakably harmonised.

Their 2009 production, Traces, won both critical and audience acclaim for its constant risk taking and waylay humour. Returning to Peacock Theatre this spring with Psy, we can expect an inspirational physical expression of conquering neuroses through a range of characters. And this is where Les 7 Doigts de la Main leave their mark on modern circus: in creating fascinating but endearing and fallible characters with weaknesses as well as strengths who grow and change as they tell their stories.

Expect a surreal atmosphere, tense and absorbing with intricate displays of creative acrobatics that celebrate individuality, camaraderie and sheer skill. Slick choreography is guaranteed, and don't be surprised if these masters of the physically expressive narrative treat you to a motif or two.
