Evil Nine Invade The Old Queen's Head 25th March

Tom Beaufoy from Evil Nine chats to Nettie Hurley about new music, hipster rappers and his next gig at The Old Queen's Head on 25th March.

London is awash with blue skies and beaming bright sunshine when I call Tom from Evil Nine for a brief chat about his next gig and where his music's at right now. He beams that Brighton has been blessed with the same gorgeous weather, so he's been basking in the garden all afternoon and confides ashamedly that he's just been beaten by his girlfriend at an online general knowledge quiz.

So what have we got to look forward to at The Queen's Head?

I always have a good time at The Queen's Head as it's a bit of a different thing, because it's a proper pub. So nothing too serious, no banging techno all night; garage through to techno, that kind of stuff. It will just be good underground dance music.

What's your sound gravitating towards right now?

We are sort of going into that electro house wave. We've been making stuff that's still got a really heavy bass but it's slightly garagey with a bit of techno. All these things have collided together and we're just trying to shake it up all the time because we get bored. Some of our fans want us to do breakbeat but we just can't do it!

What's the thoughts behind your new record label, 'For Lovers'?

Yeah it's just so we can put out more of our own stuff basically. What we're doing is not really Adam Freeland's thing, so we just wanted to do something that we wanted. It's quite easy to start up your own label today so it's worth doing as it gives you the freedom to promote your own sounds.

Are you going to use the label to mentor anyone?

Yeah maybe – we're definitely open to it if anyone wants to send their stuff in. We haven't really found anything recently but there's a lot of talented young heads out there making music. I'm sure we can find some people. It would be really nice to push people from Brighton too as not a lot of people get the encouragement from here.

What new releases and projects have you got on the horizon?

We've just done a mix for Mason with Roisin Murphy, 'Boadicea' – we're really happy with that track, I think it's going down well and that's the sound we're really into at the moment. We've got a new single coming out by 10 Rapid called 'It's You'. That's going to be a really good single. Oh and later on this year we're thinking of doing a hip hop album.

Hip hop? What inspired that idea?

We've got lots of links with East Coast rappers from working with them in the past so we thought we'd just bite the bullet and do it. And there's this new kid called Danny Brown whose blown up recently over there – a crazy hipster rapper with a weird haircut, so we've got vocals from him and that's just the start. There will be some side projects as well, but they'll be secret. It's going to be a busy year.

Who are your ones to watch right now?

Danny Brown, Tom Trago, TWR72, Funkin Matt, and Broke 1.

What's your secret for longevity?

You've just got to keep it exciting, listen to all the new sounds and always welcome new ideas. Constantly pushing it forward is what's kept us around as long as we have been. Ultimately though it's love – love of music and loving what you do – and that always rubs off.

Evil Nine will be playing at The Old Queen's Head on 25th March. It will be a wicked night, and these boys know exactly how to fuel a party.
