Christmas Exhibitions

Christmas Exhibitions

Spoonfed proposes a spectacular cultural shift, and one that's to start this year. Forget the Church, leave the sofa and head to our Cathedrals of Culture to enjoy some of the finest art this side of the moon. Given that Christmas is traditionally associated with the concept of birth, it only seems logical that all should enjoy the visual and sensual experiences to be found at Seduced: Art and Sex from Antiquity to Now. Where else, I ask, could you legitimately watch Jeff Koons anally penetrate an Italian porn star with your Gran standing stoically beside you?

If that sounds a bit too much then spritely 96 year old Louise Bourgeois, artiste extraordinaire, has a retrospective of her lifetime's work at the Tate Modern. Her nightmarish, visceral sculptures are enough to keep even the most slothful of imaginations alive. And finally, for those who don't wish to risk spewing their mince pies in shock or missing the point, there is always the Royal Academy's exhibition of 18th-19th Century British painting, Paul Mellon’s Legacy. Featuring classic works by Reynolds, Gainsborough, Constable, Turner and Blake, this is the antithesis of the 'festive' madness that leads directly to mushy-brained, family-hating lethargy. It's time to abandon the cheap TV and drunken arguments.

Christmas only comes once a year, so break the habit of a lifetime and celebrate your holiday with an experience to stimulate and, most importantly, remember.
