There's no such thing as a free lunch? There is in Trafalgar Square!

There's no such thing as a free lunch? There is in Trafalgar Square!

Enjoy a festive feast for free at Trafalgar Square tomorrow

Amidst the hustle and bustle and chaos that is the Spoonfed office, there is one word that is always sure to grab everyone's attention: and that word is, free. Tomorrow then might see an even more extensive evacuation of the office as the lunchtime hour approaches, for food waste campaigner Tristram Stuart has announced he will be performing the miraculous task of feeding 5000 thankful folk for free. The good news is you don't have to travel to Judaea for this, but instead that other sanctum sanctorum, Trafalgar Square, during the hours of 1200-1400.

The aim of this philanthropy is to highlight how many rich countries like the UK negligently waste food, or in the cases of supermarkets, wilfully do so. Therefore, the meal will be produced solely with produce that would otherwise have been wasted; for example, wonky carrots, misshapen potatoes and other outcasts of gastronomical society. On the menu is vegetable curry to warm your cockles against the ravages of winter, as well as freshly pressed fruit smoothies, bursting in equal measure with flavour and nutrients.

Mr. Stuart is operating in partnership with many charities, food companies and farmers, notably Save the Children, ActionAid and This Is Rubbish. They hope that by highlighting how easy it is to provide cheap and healthy nourishment, it will raise awareness of the discrepancies in diet between the rich and the poor. According to Save the Children, the average UK family wastes around £480 worth of food a year, and this could potentially be used to save three children from dying of malnutrition in the developing world.
