Rob Swaine, with the help of Solo, gives you an incite into one of London's most exciting and friendly free clubbing events.

For those of you who don't know, Deadfish is a London-based record label that push their own unique and wonderful brand of house music. The majority of those who make up the Deadfish clan are Italian, namely the label founder Mowgli, the ex-breakbeat producer Camel, and hugely talented DJ and producer that is Stefano Ritteri, aka Solo. We got in touch with Stefano to chat about their forthcoming 'Family and Friends' event and to get the lowdown on the label.

First things first, the Deadfish mantra is simple: "Everything is run as a family business is run, including weekly reunions, big quarrels and dinners at our favourite Italian restaurant." Solo and Mowgli first stumbled upon eachother after individually moving to England. It just so happened that they shared similar aspirations. At the time they met, Mowgli was already contemplating starting up a label: "I was very happy to hear this and supported the idea. We started making music together, and after a few months Deadfish was born!" Their first EP, 'Oriente Espresso', was a collaborative effort released at the end of 2008. It acted as an exciting representation of what was to come. The Deadfish sound, now further matured and widely respected, often incorporates samples from world music used in inovative ways, layered over minimal tech rhythms, with an ample allowance of twisted, wobbling bass. Solo himself coined the phrase 'midget house' to describe their output, an endearing term that has caught on fast.

The coming Deadfish Family and Friends extravanganza is their fifth party in a string of ongoing events. For the artists, the parties act as "an excuse to see our friends at least once a month. Both me and Mow are DJing every weekend so the Deadfish Party is our way to keep friends and family close (and have a few drinks at the same time!)". The venue of choice is once again Public Life. Just off Brick Lane, it's a quirky little venue: "it's a very nice small place, and is in fact an ex-public toilet. Most importantly to us, it's also very close to our favourite Italian restaurant!" There's that restaurant again.

Their Italian heritage is obviously very important to the Deadfish team, and why not? Their food and weather is a whole world better than ours but we can rest assured they're going nowhere as they prefer London for its buzzing music and club scene, particularly in and around Brick Lane. Stefano reminisces, "when I was 23, DJing became my main occupation. I remember coming to London every few months to buy new records and go to parties." Now he's just secured himself a residency at London's superclub Fabric, and deservedly so: his sets are constantly evolving to incorporate his latest productions and other exciting new sounds, always pushing the boundaries of tech house. For him, it really is a dream come true as he recalls, "the first time I went to Fabric I dreamt about playing there, so now this residency is really amazing!"

With his career on the verge of sky-rocketing, and the Deadfish imprint constantly growing in popularity, the Deadfish Family and Friends parties are the perfect opportunity to catch these guys for free before they become huge. Solo, Mowgli, and their residents Oli Dab Vs Robin sure do know how to placate their loyal fans, providing a party atmosphere that is friendly and fun. They always deliver on their promise of an exciting special set by a guest DJ, keeping the surprise guest a secret right up until they hit the decks. You'll just have to head down to the night to find out who it's going to be this time.
