Trouble Vision Interview

Trouble Vision Interview

Last year a twisted hybrid was born of the womb of dance music: they called it Trouble Vision, and on October 16th the club night will celebrate its 1st birthday. But it's not one of those uncoordinated, slack-necked 1 year olds, it's one of those weight-lifting genius babies. Suckled on the breast of Corsica Studios, Trouble Vision has grown into a serious contender on the London club scene. I spoke to founder Chris Gold (aka DJ Solid Gold) about his baby's nascence.

Firstly, happy birthday!

Thank you.

The line-up for the party [including Shy FX, Hannah Holland, Plastician and Idiotproof] is pretty impressive considering Trouble Vision is only a year old. How did you do it?

Well although Trouble Vision has only been going for a year, I've been running club nights for around 4 years now, so I have managed to establish good working relationships with a few agents. Aside from that, looking after the artists you do book goes a long way.

And what would be your fantasy line-up for Trouble Vision's tenth birthday?

Ooh don't tempt me. Erm... well, I guess...in room 1 we'd have Daft Punk, The Juan Maclean, DJ Sneak and Claude Von Stroke. And in room 2 we'd have... J. Dilla, Kode 9 & SpaceApe, Flying Lotus and Gaslamp Killer.

Your music policy is pretty eclectic. Can you describe it?

The only policy behind the music is that it's geared for 'the party', so to speak. Stuff that's fun and that will make people dance. That could be anything from disco to dubstep, it doesn't really matter; I'd like to think that the night attracts clubbers who are into a variety of genres. Room 1 is normally plays disco, house, electro and techno, and room 2 is more geared towards garage, dubstep, hip hop and UK funky and stuff like that. Then we always have the silent disco in room 3, which operates on the strap-line 'From ABBA to GABBA'. It gets pretty shameless in there, but it's all relatively tongue in cheek.

What other club nights are exciting in London at the moment?

There are literally so many. I think the We Fear Silence nights are consistently awesome.

Yeah, we're big Chew The Fat fans.

Love Chew The Fat, and what they're doing with the likes of Tectonic and Hyperdub. And you can't deny that Fabric are still pushing boundaries. Aside from that, Trailer Trash have similar taste in house music to Trouble Vision, as do Always Fridays. There's too many to mention!

How does a Funktion One soundsystem sound from the other side of the decks?

Its pretty juicy to be honest. The sound system at Corsica really is second to none. It can go ridiculously loud (like, I don't think it has ever been taken past 25% of full volume) and your ears still won't ring the next day.

What's the future of the brand? A record label maybe?

We're looking to start doing parties outside of London. We're hosting room 2 at Shit The Bed in Bristol in October, and we've hosted events in Brighton, so more of that would be good. A label is something we're certainly considering though, along with a booking agency. Oh, and we've just launched the first podcast in our mixtape series, and it's available on soundcloud.com.

Crowd pleasers or experimental material?

Ooh, there's got to be a happy medium. Experimental material, and then at the last possible moment slap in the pleasers.

We eagerly await them.
