James Cameron's got a lot to answer for...

If you’re nauseated by the thought of staring down a pair of urethral openings for almost an hour, then you’re probably best off avoiding Puppetry Of The Penis in 3D. For those who aren’t aware of the concept behind the show, it’s two naked guys on stage manipulating their genitals into unusual shapes reminiscent of familiar objects, foodstuffs, animals etc.
The big twist this time round of course is that it’s in 3D. Behind the guys on stage is a screen projecting 3D pre-recorded inserts and grotesque close-ups of their testicular trickery. To be honest, it doesn’t really add a great deal to the show, but then again, it’s still more entertaining and intellectually stimulating than Avatar.
The show starts with the two emerging onstage dressed in nothing but capes, looking like a new breed of superhero flashers. They open by announcing that this evening will be “a celebration of the cock,” in a manner reminiscent of Tom Cruise’s character in the film Magnolia. I’m not sure that most guys need a great deal of help with celebrating their private parts, but never mind.
As for the show itself, a lot of the impressions are worryingly accurate, but I think they miss a trick not doing an Adrian Chiles impersonation along the way. My particular favourites are the pelican, the hot dog, the fried chicken and a hideous representation of a vagina that I’m still not quite sure how they managed to achieve. Of course, this is all it is for a whole hour, aside from a smattering of predictable cock gags and innuendos that accompany each impersonation. The show then ends with a musical finale and sing-along, but based around genitalia of course. It’s clearly a limited act, and perhaps it would be more suited to a twenty minute slot in some alternative variety or burlesque evening.
Nethertheless, it is quite funny for the most part, and I like the idea that in our increasingly corporate dominated world, there are two guys out there earning a living by making shapes out of their cock and balls.
