As a concept speed dating is a daunting event at the best of times.
Original Quiz Dating sells itself as the 'the perfect icebreaker' and it certainly achieves that.
The Polka on Poland street event was a well structured-reasonably challenging- pub quiz format. The idea is that women sit around tables in small groups as do the men but each round of the quiz the men move on one table to the next group of ladies.
For one minute lets forget Emmeline Pankhurst, Maggie Thatcher and all those 1960's bra burners and accept the stereotypical image of a woman. The caricature of a bird, that agrees that girls love to gab, you get seated next to a woman with an ounce of intelligence or even an interesting nail colour the likelihood is that you'll bond with that member of the same sex that you're plonked next to, rather than any men floating about, for most of the evening. The same I'm sure goes for the gents, especially if there's been a sports event of any description that day. But as long as you remember the aim of the game, a 'mingling' quiz a very good set up. To invite the boys to mix in between the girls might be a good idea.
The host of the evening is instrumental to its success and as both quiz master and a grown up musical chairs referee he needs to be engaging and act like everyone's best mate to maintain the "we're all friends here" vibe. As opposed to the rather less enticing we're all single and gagging for a shag vibe.
As a quiz it would easily stand on its own two feet with challenging and discussion provoking questions and picture rounds, not bad as a side show for the main event. The talent scouting. And as soul mate searches go you're as likely to find one here as the frozen desserts aisle of your local supermarket or anywhere or else for that matter. The main pulling point (ignore the pun) is the opportunity to share some good times in an exciting and more often than not lonely city.
I know what you're thinking. Was I impressed by the general knowledge on display? Well... maybe. There were certainly some clever chaps but to be honest, the ability to retain sporting trivia, facts and dates is probably slightly behind a sense of humour on the crucial scale, and even further behind a pert bum as far as this crowd were concerned – it was, dear reader, a well organised and entertaining meat market.
