Speed Hating at the Albion

Speed Hating;{noun} an organized gathering of singles at which the participants meet and discuss their dislikes and gripes with a number of potential partners and decide who among those they have met they would like to meet again.

Speed Hating is an interesting concept but there are two sides to this coin. On one hand you could come across as a passionate activist with strongly held convictions and with any luck meet the only other person in London who feels as strongly about the plight of the Tooting Fruit Fly as you do. However (and this is the more likely option) you could give the impression that all you ever do is moan and that you’re not that fun a person to be around.

The Albion, Olympia is a cosy pub, which sets the tone for an intimate evening of softly lit conversation between adults. Unfortunately wackiness and gimmicks spoil the ambience. The ‘zany’ party games including playing twister with Death (stolen from Bill and Ted) and Blind Hate (stolen from Cilla Black nee. White) are all well and good but don't fit the surroundings.

Cynicism being perenially fashionable, it is surprising that speed dating in all its forms remains so popular and that so many different variations on the theme exist. We met people organically before it was invented and we will continue to meet people in bars and at work or through friends after this fad dies out. If you want a jolly night out with a few mates in a cosy local then maybe you should try The Albion on a different night.
