Tru Thoughts 10th Birthday

Tru Thoughts 10th Birthday

Initially formed in Brighton in 1999, Tru Thoughts was founded by Robert Luis and Paul Jonas as an independent record label for jazz, funk and soul releases, and so far as the story goes was started up under Luis' stairs. Over the past decade the label has acquired a reputation for swinging party sounds, and a string of endorsements including the covetted Label of the Year at the 2005 Gilles Peterson Worldwide Awards.

Their ethos has always focussed on putting the music first, making the artists the main priority and organising the business around that rather than the other way around. In so doing they have come some way in overcoming the saying that the music business is 99% business and 1% music, by supporting music that always exudes originality, soul, funky hooks and creativity. The success rate speaks for itself, some of the most colourful recordings and artists to have emerged over the last 10 years have found a start on Tru Thoughts, including lofty names like Quantic, Bonobo and Alice Russell.

Having overcome the initial trials of a small independent label, struggling with record sales and promotion, the label now sits in a comfortable position of recognition and acclaim. With the loyal support of followers who fully understand that by supporting the artists they don’t just finance the purchase of what they call ‘successories’, but rather encourage and facilitate the production of more music, Tru Thoughts is able to spearhead creativity and keep its releases fresh and new. Over the years they have spawned the growth of three related record labels; Tru Thoughts 7Sevens who focus on funk and soul releases, Unfold who release compilation albums, and Zebra Traffic, a staunch supporter and promoter of UK hip hop.

This Saturday 5th September is the 10th Year Birthday party of the label, and they will be holding a massive celebration at Brick Lane’s venerable Vibe Bar. Starting at 13:00 and going on for a marathon 12 hours, the day promises a huge line up of Tru Thoughts artists including the soul-soaked hip hop of Belleruche and the lung-belting blasts of Alice Russell.

This party is one not to be missed.

Tickets are just £5, and we at Spoonfed can highly recommend this day of celebrations. For a wee taster of whats on offer, check out the event page.
