London Dance Classes

George Bernard Shaw once called dancing the 'vertical expression of a horizontal desire legalised by music'. Get your mind out of the gutter, Mr Shaw. Dance is about fitness, self improvement, cultural enrichment and ...

Okay, we concede. The ability to move your body in a way that doesn't cause widespread revulsion can certainly make you more alluring to the opposite sex. Which is why we've given you a leg up with the Spoonfed guide to top dance classes in London. Happy tripping the light fantastic.

Salsa classes
Knowing how to salsa has become one of those must-have life skills, like knotting a cherry stalk with your tongue or building a paper mache dragon. Perhaps the easiest of Latin dances, it involves just three steps and a bit of improvisation. It's not that hard, really.

Modern jive classes
Some newfangled social dancing styles have left us flummoxed over the years but modern jive seems to be a sensible mish-mash of all things fun. Taking the best of salsa, lindy hop, swing and rock 'n' roll, it keeps you constantly bopping and bouncing - till your energy runs out.

Men-only dance classes
A man who can dance goes far in life, unless you're Patrick Swayze. These confidence-boosting ballroom dancing classes teach men how to lead their partners better so you no longer have to put up with withering looks from your lady.

Pole dancing classes
Who knew there were so many unspeakable things you could do with a pole? That might have come out a bit wrong but pole dancing has gone from Showgirls-sleazy to the sort of performance art you see on Cirque du Soleil. If you fancy a provocative dance class with full-on strength training, look no further for an – ouch – killer workout. Click here for a review.

Belly dancing classes
Credit crunch woes? Here's one possible way to get your hands on a rich oil sheikh. Belly dancing was once seen as the ultimate seduction in the Middle East and as your mother taught, you should always be prepared. Bare bellies are essential so go on, hang those muffin tops out, loud and proud.

Burlesque classes
Leave your inhibitions at the door. No, lose them about four Tube stations away because modesty and nipple tassels go together like the Queen Mother and Katie Price. You'll learn a repertoire of titillating moves like the Shimmy, which involves arching your back and shaking your bosom. Stripping is fun but not essential - apparently the strategically-choreographed removal of a white glove can ooze sex appeal. Click here for a review.

Michael Jackson Style
Speaking of white gloves, Michael Jackson hasn't left the building. Not at Pineapple Dance Studios anyway, where 'Michael Jackson Style' dance classes are more popular than ever. Instructor Antony King even has his own DVDs teaching Jacko-inspired moves. Crotch grabbing lives on!

Rave classes
Ever noticed how a night of intense clubbing never wears tires you out, while a 10-minute jog makes you want to fall to your knees and beg for mercy? Well, chances are, you won't feel the strain at a rave class, which takes you through an aerobic workout to 'doof doof doof' rave music and glow-in-the-dark props. We know it's crazy... but it's true.

Hula-hooping classes
Child's play, you say? Let's see how this works: You get a hoop, you swing it around your waist and try not to let it fall to the floor for two whole hours. Now, let's see you struggle. Click here for a review.

Clogging classes
Bet you didn't expect to see this in our list. But we at Spoonfed are supporters of the traditional arts, you know. Clogging is a dance from the north of England that involves the use of wooden clogs to create percussive rhythms. Yes, it's proper old-school but it's also proper fun.

Morris dancing
Ah-ha! Another curve ball. The folk dance that just won't go away lives on. You don't have to join a troupe but you can attend classes to keep tradition alive. Who knows, you might even get to participate in a 'dance out', which involves a whole day's dancing in multiple venues. Like a rock star... sort of.
