Ah, the humble pub quiz. As certain as death and taxes, we know there'll always be one round the corner from where we live. A night every week or so where heroes rise and fall, friendships are made or broken and everyone cheats in some way or another. From the deathly difficult to easy-as-pie, from cheap-as-chips to charitable, Spoonfed have sussed out the best quizzes in London. Let the games begin!
If you're clever...
...pit your wits against other clever clogs at the Prince Of Wales Ale House Quiz in Highgate. Be warned: Pub quizzers all over England refer to this quiz night, which has been running for nearly 20 years, in reverential tones. Not only is it hard as hell, but it's also spawned its own The Prince of Wales Highgate Quiz Book. Proceed at your own peril.
If you're thick...
...start small at The Big Dig Quiz at The Dignity in Finchley Central, where you win prizes for having the Most Imaginative Team Name (not that), or coming in next to last. If you still walk away empty-handed, that's it... you're officially hopeless and we wash our hands off you.
If you're a bit cheap...
...then do the words 'FREE ENTRY' make you tingle with excitement? We thought so. At the Oxford Arms in Camden, quiz entrants get free entry into the quiz, plus supper after. And it's the same deal at The Sheephaven Bay, also in Camden. Both venues also have a weekly roll-over cash prize. Take that, credit crunch.
If you're hungry...
...it's a curry and a quiz for a fiver at The Baring. Either that, or you can take that fiver and feed your family at Sainsbury's. But where's the fun in that?
If you're a film buff...
...steel yourself for some stiff competition at the frighteningly-popular 'You're Gonna Need A Bigger Boat' film quiz at the Boogaloo where former quiz masters have included Mr Scissorhands himself Johnny Depp. A rite of passage for cinephiles in London, upcoming themes include the 80s, Halloween and Christmas so study up. Elsewhere, there's also the Film & TV Quiz at the Ye Olde Rose and Crown organised by the McGuffin Film & Television Society; and the Film & TV Pub Quiz at the Roxy Bar and Screen. Finally, other people who know the lines of the Godfather trilogy backwards. Phew.
If you're a music buff...
...the Sounds Familiar music quiz at the Jerusalem weeds out the boys from the men, or ordinary music fans from the scary no-lifers. With several succinctly-titled rounds, such as Round Of Cheese and Pile of Shit, it's been touted as the music quiz that's “not shit at all'. Always reliable too, is Who Killed Bambi at Boogaloo, populated by skinny-jeaned indie music types with pens and pints poised for pub quiz stardom. Don't let them win, please.
If you're somewhere in between...
...meaning you read lots of Heat magazine and claim to a celebrity connoisseur, find your calling at the Popbitch Popquiz at The East Room. Pop and celebrity trivia is the name of the game, so if you don't know your Katie Price from your Jodie Marsh, your money's better spent elsewhere. (See next entry.) If you're feeling charitable...
...proceedings from The Spitalfields Crypt Trust Pub Quiz go to the The Spitalfields Crypt Trust, which helps people facing homelessness, addiction, poverty or social isolation. Go on, make someone else's day.
If you'd like take a gamble on the weather...
...what are you thinking? This is England – the weather always wins. But if you insist, try your luck at the The Gun and its lovely outdoor restaurant A Grelha. Touted as London's only al fresco quiz, you'll only need to look up to see if the stars are aligned in your favour. If it does rain, however, we have assurances that the quiz is moved indoors. Boo.
