Bouncers opens at Leicester Square Theatre next week, Simon Lee takes a look at why this modest production is likely to be a hit for the third time.
London may be one of the best cities on the planet to party in. A hive of hen-nights, tourists, punks and drunks. But does anyone think about what goes through the heads of the poor souls who deal with these drunken antics night in and night out?
John Godber’s Bouncers has only twice before been performed in London. Ironic considering the setting. It sees four actors play the part of not only the bouncers of title, but also an entourage of drunken women, boisterous lads and Hooray Henrys.
So it’s Bouncers’ third outing in the city at the Leicester Square Theatre, ‘the perfect location’ so says Godber himself, who is backing the play. Not a minor claim for a young theatre company to have the support of a Lawrence Olivier winning writer whose child they’re taking and displaying to the public. A great venue, an excellent play and a passionate young company are a recipe for something potentially very special.
Bouncers runs at Leicester Square Theatre from 25.01.10 to 06.03.10
