The fashion industry is rocked by the news that one of the biggest names in British fashion was found dead today.

Alexander McQueen

One of the leading lights in British fashion – designer Alexander McQueen – has committed suicide. With just a week to go before London Fashion Week, the 40 year-old was found at his flat near Green Park, having taken his own life.

Confirming the news, a source at McQueen's office said: “It is a tragic loss. We are not making a comment at this time out of respect for the McQueen family.” McQueen's Paris catwalk show was due to take place on March 9th.

Since being discovered by the late Isabella Blow – who also took her own life three years ago – McQueen rapidly rose to become one of the most instantly recognisable names in the world of fashion, designing clothes for the likes of Rihanna and Lady Gaga. Known for his unique sense of rebelliousness and theatricality, McQueen was one of the youngest ever designers to win British Designer of the Year, which he won four times between 1996 and 2003. His loss will be sorely felt.
