Influential contemporary art gallery moves to Shoreditch.

Is this the death knell for Vyner Street? Kate MacGarry has announced that she'll be moving out of Vyner Street and setting up a new gallery space on Old Nichol Street, just behind Redchurch Street in Shoreditch. As Art Review has pointed out, this wouldn't be newsworthy in itself except for the fact that it leaves Wilkinson – with their massive 6,000 square foot space – as the only original Vyner Street art space still operating form the same premises.
At one stage Vyner Street was the epicentre of the East End art scene, but many of the big names have since moved out: Stuart Shave is now in Fitzrovia, Ibid Projects are over in Hoxton Square, David Risley has gone all the way to Copenhagen and One in the Other has shuffled off this mortal coil completely.
With a host of new galleries rushing to fill these spaces, there's no shortage of art to be seen, particularly by those in search of a free drink on First Thursdays, but the notion of Vyner Street as somehow vital and scene-defining seems to be over. Oh well, at least Nettie Horn's still there.
Kate MacGarry – who represents such artists as Ben Rivers, Goshka Macuga, Francis Upritchard and Spoonfed favourite Marcus Coates – is opening the new space with a solo show by Florian Meisenberg.
