The one and only art and design event that's anti design...

When: 18th-26th September 2010
Where: Various venues, Redchurch Street
How much: free!

The word 'Anti' should never be underestimated; it's a word that has the power to display straight away what it stands for in exposing what it hates. So members of an 'Anti' group immediately take a stance that segregates them from others and puts them squarely in a social standing purely for their 'Anti' status. Basically 'Anti' is a big angry slap in the face statement.

So it's no surprise when you find out that the Anti Design Festival was originally created as a direct response to the pretty commercialism of the London Design Festival. Operating across multiple venues around Redchurch Street in Shoreditch, these design warriors promise taste, style, experiment and risk if you come over to their side.

Exhibitions, installations, workshops and performances will be taking place as well as talks in all areas of design. With a strong premise that failure is not something to be scared of but something to face when in an unhindered atmosphere – it's hard not to imagine them like the London Design Festival's aggressive, messy, dysfunctional teenage brother.

Including evening performances, a restaurant, an anti-fashion exploration and the word's first 'Microplex' (a five-seat cinema)...hey I think I've got one of those in my house.

These guys are taking an intelligent view on modern design and actively seeking out discussion without compromising their hardcore edge with a fierce manifesto: “When was the last time,” they ask, “you encountered any culture that you can say was really dangerous, that actually challenged anything?” Dangerous design is an exciting concept, but let's try not to get too carried away with those unseemly ideas, people!

Encounter what could possibly be life changing design or more realistically just enjoy the “no_use, no_function and no_fear” idea of the Festival.

The Anti Design Festival is on the 18th to the 26th of September 2010.
