Art Work Space are setting up a cool new pop-up gallery on the Hackney Road in association with Bistrotheque.

Art Work Space

A pop-up art gallery in East London? What will they think of next? Oh but wait, this one actually looks wicked. Having launched last autumn in The Hempel Hotel, the already-acclaimed Art Work Space is now setting up a little spring-time pop-up gallery on the Hackney Road, just opposite the lovely Hackney City Farm.

In the short time it's been open, Art Work Space has already begun to establish a reputation for exhibiting work by interesting and talented young contemporary artists. After opening with an exhibition of paintings by Haslam Fox, the gallery has gone on to show Niall O'Brien's photographs of urban subcultures and Conrad Frankel's strikingly rendered black and white paintings based on 19th century photos. Their current exhibition is a first solo show for artist/illustrator Yasmin Sandytia, whose ink and watercolour drawings are chock full of stylised characters. Melancholy, loneliness, even boredom are etched across these expressive figures. But there's humour too –  in fact they're not dissimilar in some ways to some of Edward Lear's darker little images.

The new venture in East London sees Art Work Space continue to champion the work of this group of young artists, and bring their work to new audiences. As Gallery Director Naomi Murtagh says, “I wanted to find a way to make sure that their art was seen by as many people as possible and a pop-up exhibition space in this great location seemed the perfect way to do so.”

Art Work Space East is open from 15th April to 9th May 2010 at 338-340 Hackney Road, London E2 7AX. Tue-Sat 10am-6pm.

There will be a free Q&A featuring journalist Justin Quirk and artist Niall O'Brien at
Bistrotheque on 22nd April.
