Ten east London museums club together for a weekend of fun and games.

CultureLine

When: 6th-8th August
Where: East London
How much: Free!

Back in May we reported on the launch of CultureLine, a partnership involving ten museums situated along the length of the recently opened East London Line extension, and now, this August, all these institutions are getting together to put on a weekend of cultural adventure and discovery.

CultureLine involves (from north to south along the line) the Hackney Museum, Geffrye Museum, Wesley's Chapel, the Royal London Hospital Museum, Whitechapel Gallery, the Women's Library, Brunel Museum, Horniman Museum, Crystal Palace Museum and the Museum of Croydon, and they're all putting on a host of events, tours, music, discussions and activities to encourage people to experience something a little bit different from the usual central London museums.

Interestingly, in yesterday's Guardian, Mark Ravenhill suggested that in order to move forward from the funding cuts announced by the coaltion government, arts institutions should attempt to work not against each other but together for the common good. “I believe, Ravenhill writes, “we can find another co-operative model, one in which public arts organisations come together to promote their work and build new audiences. This would be considerably cheaper. But it would also mean a new way of thinking, a paradigm shift away from the model of arts organisation as individual business unit.”

Perhaps CultureLine is exactly the paradigm shift he's seeking. Either way the Discovery Weekend sounds like fun.
