Calling all Horrors fans! Faris Badwan to exhibit over 100 of his artworks in London this August.

As lead singer of The Horrors, Faris Badwan’s dark circled eyes, big hair and slight frame make him look like he just stepped out of a Tim Burton film, and this peculiar fairytale character has a lifestyle to suit. Fans of his band will know that Faris has another trick up his perfectly fashioned sleeve; as a former student of St Martins College of Art, he loves to sketch. So his new solo exhibition at The Book Club this August – entitled Drawing a Straight Number Nine – is bound to give further insight into his oddball mystique.
It seems that Faris prefers a self-contained life between music and art, letting the steady ink flow from one illustration to another: he describes his drawings as “the one constant solid thing in my life – a stream which runs regardless of what I happen to be doing or where." The exhibition promises one hundred original new pieces of work, including artwork, projections, and drawings on all manner of everyday things that normal folk simply discard, like restaurant napkins and supermarket receipts.
Known to wear jeweller’s magnifying goggles when working in tiny sketchbooks, Faris’ work complements the haunting jaunty style of his music. Eccentric and a bit shabby around the edges, he includes intricate dreamlike imagery that makes you wonder just what goes under that big hair of his. Creating a separate illustrated world, unconscious to his surroundings, it seems Faris is endlessly inspired. And with all this work spilling out of him he must leave a rather large paper trail.
Limited edition prints will be on sale at the private view on 11th August and there’ll also be DJ sets from Faris and his friends…up till 2am – sounds more like an album launch party, than your ordinary exhibition opening. A must see – ink it into your doodle filled diaries.
Faris Badwan - Drawing a Straight Number Nine is at The Book Club from 11th-29th August 2010.
