Have your hair cut by children in the name of theatre. Yes, it's true.

Haircuts by Children

Now we can't speak for you (not all the time anyway) but we at Spoonfed take great care over our hair, and with good reason: in the cut-throat world of the London entertainment industry, good hair is of paramount importance. I mean just take a look at our idols – where would Michael Winner be without hair? Or Brian Sewell? Or Morrissey? Nowhere, that's where.

So when we heard about something entitled Haircuts by Children, our first thought was something along the lines of, “you gotta be joking, right? Don't you realise how long this look takes in front of the mirror every morning?” But then we read a bit more and decided it sounds really cool.

Part of LIFT 2010, Haircuts by Children sees children from Canning Town and Newham offering free haircuts to the public at Kaizo in Hoxton on Saturday 10th July. Having worked with Canadian arts company Mammalian Diving Reflex and London-based hairstylist/artist Faisal Abdu'Allah, these wee children have honed their skills with scissors and clippers and are now ready to be unleashed on the world.

The concept is not just about getting a free haircut, although that's always a good thing: Haircuts by Children also “playfully engages with the empowerment of children” apparently. Certainly there's a fun and rather intriguing inversion of the usual adult/child dynamic and a level of trust involved that otherwise you rarely think too much about. And it's free – did we say that already? Awesome.

Haircuts by Children takes place at Kaizo, 67-68 Charlotte Road EC2A 3PE Saturday 10th July, 11am-2pm.
