We have a winner!

Jonny Briggs

In news that will come as no surprise to regular readers of Spoonfed, Jonny Briggs was announced yesterday as the winner of the 2011 Channel 4 / Saatchi New Sensations prize. The judges – who included artists Hew Locke and Chantal Joffe as well as Rebecca Wilson from the Saatchi Gallery – also decided to award a Special Commendation to Gabriella Boyd. The other two shortlisted finalists were Ronin Cho and Krystina Naylor.

We first came across Jonny's work at his 2007 Chelsea degree show and have been keeping tabs on his progress ever since. He first featured in New Sensations in 2008, back when it was at the old Truman Brewery, and in 2010 received the ultimate accolade of being listed as one of Spoonfed's Top 10 London Photographers, alongside the likes of Stephen Gill, Tom Hunter and Noemie Goudal. He completed his BA from the RCA earlier this year, and now joins Sarah Maple, Mark Davey, Oliver Beer and Nika Neelova in the list of New Sensations winners.

Dark and more than a little twisted, Jonny's work is leavened by a healthy dose of surreal humour, as well as intriguing conceptual processes that add layers of interest to the bold, occasionally forceful imagery. His work is currently on show at the New Sensations exhibition alongside contemporary art fair The Future Can Wait at Victoria House in Bloomsbury.

Channel 4 / Saatchi New Sensations is at Victoria House until 15th October 2011.
