Julia Vogl Catlin Art

Good news! Artist Julia Vogl has been announced as the winner of the Catlin Art Prize. At the awards bash at Londonewcastle project Space on Redchurch Street in Shoreditch, Vogl – who graduated from the Slade last year – was declared the winner of the prestigious £5,000 prize. We were tipping her for victory to anyone who'd listen (which is nobody) so we're claiming this as a victory for Spoonfed as well as for interesting young artists.

Vogl's work – which we've seen at a number of high-profile events over the past couple of years – is marked by its sense of fun and site-specific interaction. We still have colour-coded badges marking us out as both art critics and shameless freeloaders from Vogl's contribution to The Future Can Wait in 2011. Her work in the Catlin show encourages visitors to create a communal mood-based area out of carpet tiles (much more fun that it sounds).

Established in 2007, the insurance company-sponsored Catlin Prize aims to reward and promote the work of recent UK art graduates. The Catlin Guide consists of a selection of 40 promising young artists, selected by eagle-eyed curator Justin Hammond, and this number is then whittled down to a shortlist. A panel of judges, which for 2012 consisted of Nancy Durrant, Ossian Ward and Joe La Placa, then select the winner.

In addition, 2012 saw the introduction of a public vote, which was won by Adeline de Monseignat. She scooped a prize of £2,000. The other finalists are Greta Alfaro, Gabriella Boyd, Poppy Bisdee, Jonny Briggs, Max Dovey, Tom Howse, Ali Kazim and Soheila Sokhanvari.

The Catlin Art Prize 2012 is at Londonewcastle Project Space until 25th May 2012.
