And the winner is...

Laure Prouvost

In a glittering awards ceremony held last night at the Whitechapel Gallery, the winner of the Max Mara Art Prize was announced as French contemporary artist Laure Prouvost. At least we assume it was glittering – Spoonfed's invitation was strangely lost in the post. But no matter. By winning, Prouvost has secured herself the healthy sum of £10,000, plus an exhibition at the Whitechapel and a six-month residency in Italy.

She beat off stiff competition from the other four shortlisted artists – Spartacus Chetwynd, Christina Mackie, Avis Newman and Emily Wardill – to become the fourth winner of the Max Mara Art Prize for Women (to give it its full title), the only UK art prize for women.

The judging panel who made the decision was chaired by Iwona Blazwick, Director of the Whitechapel Gallery and included Lisa Milroy, artist; Muriel Salem, collector; Amanda Wilkinson, gallerist; and Gilda Williams, critic and lecturer.

Prouvost has had solo shows at Tate Britain and MOT International in the last two years, but is probably best known to Londoners for her recent contribution to Frieze Art Fair – a series of amusing signs telling visitors things like “You're going in the wrong direction.” Well after this victory, Prouvost proves that she's certainly not.
