After a £20 million redevelopment, the Museum of London presents the history of London through a series of fascinating objects.

The Museum of London has announced that's it's to open five new galleries exploring the history of London from 1666 to the present day. The Galleries of Modern London have cost a total of £20 million, £11.5 million of which was provided by the Heritage Lottery Fund, and the whole project looks set to capitalise on the anticipated increase in attention that London will experience thanks to the 2012 Olympics.

With over 7,000 weird and wonderful objects, as well as film and interactive elements, the Galleries of Modern London tell the story of London from the city's recovery after the Great Fire of 1666, via the Great Exhibition of 1851, the Suffragettes, the Sixties and Selfridges. Wars, fashions, theatres, taxis, bowler hats, flags and telephone boxes – this is a London that is both instantly recognisable and constantly surprising.

The Galleries open on 28th May 2010 and will contain some pretty cool items. There's a recreation of Georgian pleasure gardens, a war room, Nelson's sword and some rather charming Huguenot silks. We're particularly excited about seeing the lift that they used to have in Selfridges back in 1929 – it looks awesome! All in all, this looks set to provide a valuable addition to the narrative of our fair capital.
