The beauty of science, captured by some truly wonderful photography.

A photograph depicting surgeons carrying out keyhole surgery has scooped one of the top prizes at the Wellcome Image Awards 2011. During a very enjoyable event at the Wellcome Collection last night, David Bishop from UCL Medical School was announced as the winner of one of the two Special Awards, presented by science writer and multimedia editor at Nature, Adam Rutherford. The other Special Award went to Fernan Federici from the University of Cambridge and Lionel Dupoy from the Scottish Crop Research Institute for their microscopic depiction of cell division in thale cress.
All 21 award-winners are currently on display on the first floor of the Wellcome Collection, and it really is a magical little exhibition, that captures both mankind's impressive technological advances and the breathtaking wonder of the natural world. Brain neurons, fungi, mouse retinas, kidneys, zebrafish, moth wings, honeybees, even a blood clot and an aneurysm on an 84 year-old man: the really is beauty everywhere.
Here's a selection of our favourite images:
Annie Cavanagh, Wellcome Images, Honey Bee
Dr Steve Wilson & Dr Kara Cerveny, UCL, Wellcome Images, Sunrise in the eye: zebrafish retina
Prof. M. Hausser / UCL, Wellcome Images, Pyramidal neurons
Derren Ready, Wellcome Images, Peridontal bacteria
Anne Weston, LRI, CRUK, Wellcome Images, Clotting blood on sticking plaster
