23 year-old contemporary artist Russell Hill has been awarded the 2011 Catlin Art Prize, it was announced last night. During a lavish party taking place at the Tramshed on Rivington Street in Shoreditch, Hill – who only graduated from Wimbledon College of Art in 2010 – was declared the winner of the prestigious £5,000 prize. The other finalists were Leah Capaldi, Noemie Goudal, Darren Harvey-Regan and Juliette Losq. Interestingly, Hill is the only one who hasn't completed an MA.
Established in 2007, the insurance company-sponsored Catlin Prize aims to reward and promote the work of recent UK art graduates. The Catlin Guide consists of a selection of 40 promising young artists, selected by eagle-eyed curator Justin Hammond, and this number is then whittled down to a shortlist of five. Then a panel of judges, which for 2011 was comprised of collector Richard Greer, curator Julia Royse, and one of London's most exciting commercial gallerists, Simon Oldfield, select the winner.
Hill's works, which involve the reappropriation of everyday consumer objects, like air fresheners, are on show at the Tramshed alongside the works of the other finalists, including Spoonfed favourite Noemie Goudal. In addition, there's also work on show by past winners and participants, including Adam Dix, virtuoso painter Alex Ball, and Paul Greenleaf, whose blandly enigmatic photography is one of the highlights of the exhibition.
The Catlin Art Prize is at the Tramshed until 22nd May 2011.
