The recession strikes.

SELECT Art Fair

It's with reluctance that we bring you the sad news that SELECT Art Fair has been cancelled. The organisers of the contemporary art fair, which was scheduled to take place at the Business Design Centre in Islington this May, have decided not to go ahead with the launch of the new fair, citing “challenging market conditions” for the decision.

Conceived by the organisers of the hugely successful London Art Fair, SELECT Art Fair was to be pitched somewhere between Zoo Art Fair (which hasn't surfaced since 2009) and Affordable Art Fair. The aim was to gather the cream of London's exciting contemporary art galleries and sell work for under £5,000 over four days in May.

A statement on the fair's website explains: “After careful consideration, it was felt that challenging market conditions meant there was a risk the Fair might not meet the needs and expectations of exhibiting galleries and visitors. Therefore, the decision has been taken to cancel the fair rather than present a potentially compromised event.”

We're particularly sad about this news, as the kinds of galleries that were scheduled to be involved are exactly the kind that we try to champion here at Spoonfed; small, interesting galleries that represent exciting contemporary artists. This looked like providing the perfect solution – some exposure, some sales, and no compromise on integrity or quality. But sadly, thanks to the recession, it won't be happening – here's hoping there might be a chance for SELECT to launch next year.
