South London's art galleries unite.

Tired of First Thursdays? Us too, frankly. Vyner Street and Redchurch Street are both fading forces on the contemporary London art scene, and there's barely ever any free booze these days anyway. And now there's a new kid on the block, or newish at least. This February sees the launch of South London Art Map – an enterprise that incorporates a printed map, interactive website, art tours and co-ordinated Last Fridays late-night gallery openings.
South London Art Map represents a major expansion in terms of scope and scale of the brilliant Deptford Art Map, launched in 2009 by director of bearspace gallery, Julia Alvarez. The new South London Art Map focuses on three geographical hubs – Bankside, Peckham and Deptford – and has the support of a range of important names, including Tate Modern, the South London Gallery, Goldsmiths and Hannah Barry.
Apart from the fact that this is clearly a great way to link together a diverse range of galleries – many of whom are amongst the most exciting in the capital – there's one thing that currently intrigues us. Last time, somebody launched an alternative to the Time Out and Whitechapel Gallery-branded First Thursdays, there were threats of legal action. Salon Contemporary's First Wednesdays is still going over in Notting Hill, so we don't think anything came of it. Even though the thought of Tate Modern and the Whitechapel Gallery going head to head through their lawyers is pretty hilarious, we also think South London Art Map is a wicked idea, and wish them all the best.
