Chinese contemporary artist Ai Weiwei's new installation opens to the public this week.

Tuesday 12th October sees the opening of the latest contemporary art commission in the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern. The eleventh work for the much-publicised Unilver Series sees Chinese artist, blogger and activist Ai Weiwei take over the vast space.

His work – entitled Sunflower Seeds – consists of over 100 million individually handmade sunflower seeds that form a thick cobbly carpet across the floor of the Turbine Hall. Each seed has been individually made out of porcelain by skilled artisans in the city of Jingdezhen, famed, apparently, for its production of porcelain.

The work claims to explore issues like the legacy of Chairman Mao, China's role in the world today and the relationship between the individual and society as a whole. It's also pleasant enough to traipse over and lounge upon.

The Unilever Series - Ai Weiwei is at Tate Modern from 12th October 2010 to 2nd May 2011.
