Top 10 London Art Blogs

An unashamedly partial list of our favourite art bloggers, most of whom live in or write primarily about London, or maybe just came to visit once.

Julie Khan

We like reading stuff on the internet, particularly stuff about the London art scene. It kind of comes with the job – you always want to see what everyone else is up to, what they think about the exhibition you've just been to, and, more importantly, where the next free glass of wine is coming from. London is blessed with some great arts writers – and not just the big names. Everyone already knows and loves/hates the likes of Brian Sewell, Waldemar Januszczak, Rachel Campbell-Johnston, Anthony Haden-Guest etc, but here's a list of our favourite London art blogs by some lesser known but equally splendid people.

Diary of a thirty-something Art Dealer
Beverley Knowles used to run Beverley Knowles Fine Art in Notting Hill but is now a roaming art dealer and advisor. Her blog – serialised on Spoonfed – is entertaining, acutely observant and extremely honest. Expect musings on anything from Jung to Zac Efron.

Cathedral of Shit
Written by one or more anonymous art world insiders, the amazingly brilliant Cathedral of Shit skewers the pomposity, nepotism, hypocrisy and pseudo-intellectual balderdash that is so unsurprisingly rife in the London art scene. It's basically Private Eye but with more art, and more vitriol.

Rightness of Wayward Sentiment
Critic, curator, and one of Spoonfed's top Twitter buddies, Crystal Bennes is one of those people who always seems to know everything cool that's going on in the city. She writes sporadically on all manner of topics – art, fashion, music, food...It's the kind of writing that makes you glad to live in London.

Fine Art London
Art news, features, reviews that keep you up to date with what's going on in the London art world. The tone is perhaps a little distant and aloof – they cover “even street art”– but we rather like that. There's no real politics or agenda and it's quite impersonal, but sometimes it's nice not to have personal opinions rammed down your throat.

Artfeelers Blog
Claire Flannery runs Artfeelers, an organisation that gives intimate, cheap and fun tours round the hidden parts of the east London art scene. Her blog combines reviews, info about upcoming exhibitions and assorted other bits of news and stuff. She also writes for Spoonfed from time to time.

Saatchi Blog
Although it looks unutterably vile, it always has lots of interesting info about what's going on in art-wise around the world. Video content, news and reviews, as well as opinion pieces by the likes of Paul Carey-Kent make sure there's always something for everyone.

Art Sleuth
A while back we used to serialise Art Sleuth reviews on Spoonfed – we're not sure who writes it now but whoever it is always does a good job of keeping their finger on the throbbing pulse of the London art scene. And it always has lots of nice images too.

Cathy Lomax
Artist, critic and curator Cathy Lomax runs Transition Gallery, one of Hackney's more influential contemporary art galleries. It provides an interesting insight into the life and views of one of London's busiest and most consistently interesting art figures.

Stuckism
Not strictly speaking a blog, Stuckism.com is the online home of Charles Thomson and his anti-conceptual art Stuckist brethren. As well as news and links to all manner of Stuckist activities and coverage around the world, the site is rich with imagery and Thomson's own detailed, thoughtful and idiosyncratic reviews.

Contemporary Art Criticism

Billed self-deprecatingly as just a load of "tweets, rants and raves" Contemporary Art Criticism is in fact so much more. The author's favourite target (and it's a popular one) is the YBAs – the systematic destruction of Liam Gillick's ill-formed burbling is masterful.
